Bored to tears with “This is the greatest new tool, watch me cut things” bobble-head reviews? This is not that.
We teardown a brand new Makita hypoid saw for woodworking. I review the construction of this saw from the inside out, complete with electrical testing and explanation of the difference between a Skilsaw Worm Gear and the Makita Hypoid. I use a microscope to show the surface and wear-in of the gears.
We also test the melting point of Makita’s plastic tool housing.
This isn’t a sales review, this is part reverse-engineering and part hacking.

Errata: OLD cars use spiral bevels they mostly changed to hypoid in the 40s. Ooops.
“It really was the point of the hypoid gear in automobiles because it allowed for lower floors and tunnels in cars.” -anonymic79
30:10. That got a little dark
Dude, the blind woman is in my neighborhood here in vienna. Should have come by for a coffee.
some saws prefer a run of 5 to 10 min to wear in brushes before first use…
according to clip board bs instructions
So…. did Englishbob get his bespoke breastplate?
Actually the differential in a car with a solid rear axle (still common in America) is often a hypoid gearset, so the propshaft can sit lower and the floor of the car can be lower.
@AvE engineerd here, respect for the iron doughnut… The old man is a general contractor, framer for 15 years, the skill saw has a skookum switch but that is typical failure mode, that and plastic deform of the base plate. No geartrain failure. Don't care to look at the math, history says more than our attempt to reperezent physics.. Keep up the good work.
P.S. please never become a machinist 😉
Great reviews mate.
A- you are my idol, super smart, super cool human being,
B- I have a milwakee worm drive and I tried to turn it into something else and trashed everything except the motor, can I combine this motor with another motor to make a super saw??? I need a more powerful saw to rip lumber, I'm a framer and am tired of burning up all my saws ripping large beams
Take a shot every time he says "skookum".
You got to love the Shtank of gear oil
thanks for using USB microscope. I was thinking about buying you one just the other day. you're the man keep up the good work
Makita. The last bastion of true quality… In spite of all the marketing department mumbo-jumbo, this is a company I trust.
If this does not work with the allen key use a hammer
Just as cold as a whores heart….🙂… classy!
